Throughout each week, our students receive specialized instruction from arts professionals in visual arts, music, dramatic arts, and dance. But their arts instruction is not limited to these special classes. The students enjoy arts engagement in their own classrooms on a daily basis. Whether it's illustrating stories they are publishing, acting in classroom skits, presenting holiday performances, or studying art and culture from around the world, our children revel in an art-infused culture. Our administration, teachers, and parents emphasize the arts throughout the curriculum. Many classes put on their own plays, or dramatically interpret poetry, or shoot commercials and short films. The children make their own costumes or hats and perform for various audiences. While learning about history or people from other countries, the kids will create art in related styles, such as African masks or a Chinese dragon parade. Our teachers would love your involvement if you are interested in helping with, or even leading, artistic events in the class. It is fun and most effective to bring their scholastic units to life through the arts. Parents bring in their guitar or other instruments and the children engage in song. Other people come in and lead the kids through fun movement, dance, and acting excercises. And many help with shadow art, paper mache', and collage. Talk with your teacher and enjoy furthering the arts in our school. Also, ask your teacher or contact SOPA to have your child's class perform at a monthly SOPA meeting!
