The California State standard requires that all students receive 100 minutes of physical education per week. Our YMCA P.E. program provides 50 minutes a week and the remainder is provided throughout the week by classroom teachers and parent volunteers in a variety of ways.
Throughout the week, teachers organize games, relays, dances, and grade level competitions for the children to develop their age-appropriate mind-body-locomotor abilities.
Parent volunteers also come in and organize instruction in specific athletic skills, such as basketball, baseball, Frisbee, soccer, the President’s Physical Fitness Challenge, and many other athletic activities.
The fourth and fifth grade teachers unite to bring a unified fitness program to the grade each day. You can find the 4th graders running the track to fitness while improving their running technique. The 5th grade prepares the entire year for the 5th grade physical fitness test which includes running a timed mile. The 5th grade also participates in a wonderful trip to Catalina in the Spring to the Catalina Island Marine Institute, where the science based curriculum includes snorkeling, hiking and canoeing.
We encourage available parents to help their child's teacher in the children's fitness lessons, making the school week fun and healthy for the kids. Please communicate with your child's teacher to help out. |
