Overview | 5th Grade News | 5th Grade Events Calendar
Typically, the students have gone to school together for the last five years, becoming close friends and sharing a young lifetime of experiences together. These fun memories culminate in the fifth grade year, full of special activities for our school's leaders. For starters, the fifth graders serve as the school's student leaders, making up the executives in the Student Council. Culminating six years of fun physical fitness at the school, the fifth graders train for and perform the Physical Finess Test, performing an array of fitness tests, including running a timed mile. They are very proud of their athletic accomplishments after exercising hard with teachers and parent volunteers throughout the year. Later in the year, the fifth graders travel to Catalina Island for a four-day retreat at the Catalina Island Marine Institute, studying marine and terrestrial science, hiking, snorkeling, and learning valuable social skills that come with a sleep-away retreat, and bonding through a shared experience they will remember forever. The trip is chaperoned by the 5th grade teachers and a few parents. A great tradition at SOES has the fifth graders paint their own ceramic tile, which is proudly presented on the walls of the school for all to see, for future generations to connect with, and for alumni to come back and revisit with a smile. At year's end, a week of festivities celebrate the students' years of accomplishment. A picnic at a park, softball game against the teachers, beautiful graduation ceremony, and celebration dance party highlight the week. Fifth-grade parents organize many of the above activities to make this last elementary year their best ever before their darlings move on to middle school. To help with planning and implementation, contact Patty Puskar at patty@shermanoaksparents.com or ask your child's teacher how you can help. Enjoy this amazing year! In following with tradition here at SOES, we want to make sure our children have an extra special year with activities that are solely for 5th grade. These special activities are not funded by LAUSD so it's up to us, the fifth grade parents, to find ways to fundraise for these events. These events include the March Field Trip to Catalina, 5th Grade t-shirts. a culmination picnic, a culmination dance, Class of 2009 Tiles. The traditional 5th grade activities require the 5th grade parents to donate/raise funds. The estimated cost per child is $375.00. Committees are forming NOW to plan for these events: Water Sales and Recycling Candy Grams – Coming in October!
